Title: “Fatty acid transport and accumulation in the brain during disease and development”

Abstract: Cells need fatty acids to build membranes and as a metabolic energy source, but accumulation of fatty acids is toxic. Preventing fatty acid accumulation is particularly important in the brain as it is the most lipid-rich organ in the body. I will discuss how neurons avoid fatty acid toxicity during oxidative stress by transporting fatty acids to neighbouring glia via lipid particles. I will then discuss the role of fatty acid transport and accumulation in lipids droplets in both disease and development of the brain.
